Play in a Day at Playfest Feb 11th

Play in a Day:
When: Monday, Feb 11th, 7pm
Where: Orlando Shakes
Reservations: 407-447-1700

History
Play-In-A-Day has been around for years in Orlando. Several years ago it was hosted by SAK, FRINGE, The Central Florida Theatre Alliance (AKA- CFPA & The Arts& Cultural Alliance). Last year PlayFest took charge and now it is hosted by them. Pat Flick, the Director/Producer of PlayFest hires me to produce and artistic direct the event. It is my 2nd year to produce it and my 8th year to be a part of it. Play-In-A-Day is now a benefit for PlayFest. The concept is very common and done in many cities throughout the US.

How Does it Work?
There will be 6 different groups of artistic teams. 1 writer/1director and different amounts of actors paired with each. This part of the event is 100% determined by a lottery on SUNDAY, FEB. 10th at 1:30pm at The Margeson Theatre @ Orlando Shakes. There will be 1 theme selected (by lottery) at this tiime as well. There will be some surprises that will be announced at the time of the lottery. Immediately following the lottery, each paired group will have 30 minutes to go off somewhere at Shakes and chat. Following that, the writers leave and write a 10 minute play focused on the theme given. At 7:30am on Mon. Feb. 11th- the writers will bring their scripts to Orlando Shakes. Directors will have 1 hour to read the scripts and plan their blocking etc... Then the actors join in the mix. Rehearsals happen in the morning. We break for lunch at noon (provided by PlayFest) and then afternoon rehearsals begin. Each group will have30 minutes for their individual tech in the theatre. The show happens that nite at 7pm~:)

Choosing Artists
Throughout the years the process has been done differantly- everything from juried to lottery to nominations by local theatres etc.. This year, since PlayFest has become a totally juried event- so has Play-In-A-Day. I have selected artists from all walks, backgrounds and talents. However, I have taken great consideration in putting together a team of folks that represent a diverse mix from many of the local community, professional & academic theatres as well as theme parks in town -staying true to one of the original concepts of the event-which is to give artists that may not normally have an opportunity to work together -to do so.
