About:
A modern dance collaborative concert featuring the works of Ellie Potts Barrett, Voci Dance and special guest, Cheryl Mann, formerly of Hubbard Street Dance Chicago.
The show opens with 12 dancers in a lively piece with music by Bach. "Tango" is a modern dance piece in three sections for four dancers to music by Lalo Schifrin. "For Opal" features Eliza Harwood Watson as Opal in a heartbreaking story. When Opal Petty was a teenager, all she wanted to do was dance and have a boyfriend. Her parents were fundamental Pentecostals, and they only understood that there was one way to deal with these behaviors. They would have the preacher come and pray over Opal and talk about the serpents and the snakes. They also took her to a doctor, and in the days before modern psychiatry, were directed to the Austin State Hospital . They committed her in 1934. She remained there for nearly four decades. "Two for Tutu" has a change of costumes from hoop skirts to ballet tutus. "Storm" which closes the concert is an athletic high flying modern dance piece for 7 women with music by Vanessa Mae.
Voci Dance brings recent works from their November, 2007 concert, with original music by Simon Henneman from Seattle. The pieces include a beautifully staged solo for Mila Makarova, "Interlude," as well as pieces choreographed for the company by Artistic Director Genevieve Bernard, and company dancer, Mary Clymene B. Wilkins. Cheryl Mann performs a solo work choreographed by Lucas Crandall from Hubbard Street Dance Chicago.
