An anonymous person has created a new Facebook profile called Orlando People Critic. This is how he/she/they describe themselves:
"I AM THE PEOPLE'S CRITIC! I AM BEHOLDEN TO NO ORGANIZATION, GROUP, CORPORATION, FRIEND, FOE, CLIQUE. MY REVIEWS AND OPINIONS ON CENTRAL FLORIDA THEATRICAL PRODUCTIONS BEGIN FROM NEUTRALITY AND RELY ON VERIFIABLE INPUT FROM MY FIVE SENSES."They provide a more in-depth look into who they are and why they have created this profile:
As a resident of Central Florida for quite a few years now and a supporter of local theater, I have continuously been struck by how the theater audience masses (and I use that term loosely) seem to be led by the nose by certain newspapers and/or self proclaimed and self congratulating arts intelligentsia/clique.
Is it just me, or are there a TON of talented actors, writers, directors, singers, set designers, techs, theater companies, etc who we never get to hear about because the Sentinel and Weekly review and highlight the same tired old acts at the same tired old places.
Have you never read a review proclaiming how some well known (in local circles) actor or director has once again created a masterpiece only to go see it and wonder what freaking show they saw? Or worse yet, have you gone to see a masterful performance that nobody is hearing about because the local media refuse to cover it?
Have you never felt left out at some local gathering of the arts community because you are being ignored by the clique of local Arts Legends who walk around like the some twisted bizzaro version of the Royal Family, deciding who is worthy of their awe inspiring gaze or "gasp" word or two from their inspiring lips?
Well, I've decided ENOUGH!!! If this country can rally around a black man and elect him President of the whole damned country, then use theater goers, thespians, singers, playwrights, authors, designers, etc should be able to decide FOR OURSELVES what/who is good or not and what/who is over rated.
I'll be posting reviews for ALL to see, but I encourage all of you to comment back with thoughtful reviews of your own. We can all share together in figuring out what's worthy of our dwindling dollars and scarce hours. And if you think some mainstream reviewer is full of it...let me know that, too!
