The Orlando Museum of Art (OMA) presents Elegant Enigmas: The Art of Edward Gorey opening on Friday, August 13, 2010, and continuing through Halloween. The exhibition features original illustrations, preparatory sketches, unpublished drawings and ephemera by master illustrator and author Edward Gorey. An illustrated catalogue with an essay by Gorey scholar Karen Wilkin accompanies the exhibition.

Elegant Enigmas pays tribute to the work of Edward Gorey (1925-2000), best known for his brilliant drawings and witty, offbeat stories. Described as “incredibly sophisticated…stylish and inventive” by the New York Observer, Gorey’s signature pen-and-ink illustrations and his unique wit has led him to be considered one of America’s most imaginative and eccentric creative artists. Elegant Enigmas includes approximately 170 objects drawn primarily from the Edward Gorey Charitable Trust, featuring selections from such well-known publications as The Gashlycrumb Tinies, The Doubtful Guest, The Unstrung Harp and The Gilded Bat, among others.

During his lifetime, Gorey published more than 100 books, designed sets and costumes for numerous theater productions (including his Tony-award winning 1977 production of Dracula) and illustrated works for a wide array of authors including Charles Dickens, T.S. Eliot, Virginia Woolf, H.G. Wells and John Updike. In 1980, Derek Lamb’s animated opening credits for the PBS series Mystery!, based on Gorey’s drawings, introduced the artist’s work to millions of television viewers.

The OMA is delighted to be working again with Stella Sung composer and director of the University of Central Florida’s (UCF) Center for Research and Education in Arts, Technology and Entertainment. In 2008, Stella composed Rockwell Reflections, which was performed by the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra during the OMA’s presentation of American Chronicles the Art of Norman Rockwell. For the Edward Gorey exhibition, Stella will be creating an ambient soundscape that will be heard in the OMA galleries during the exhibition.

The Art and Theater Departments of UCF will be collaborating with OMA on a special topics class in which students will design and fabricate costumes inspired by Gorey’s characters. Examples of the costumes will be on view at OMA in October.

“The Orlando Museum of Art looks forward to participating in this first major traveling exhibition of Edward Gorey’s art,” said Maureen McKenna, Associate Curator. “The exhibition offers an intimate look at a wide variety of Gorey’s work, ranging from detailed, elegant pen and ink illustrations to costume designs and elaborately hand-decorated envelopes created to mail his letters.” The exhibition has been organized by the Brandywine River Museum, Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania.
