For over 30 years the Audubon Center for Birds of Prey has been lovingly rehabilitating injured and sick birds of prey at this urban facility in Maitland. They care for the largest volume of rehabilitated birds East of the Missippi, over 600 annually. They have a release rate of 40% back into the wild.
This rehabilitation center is home to 22 species of raptors including owls, hawks, vultures, and the American Bald Eagle.
They offer many educational opportunities for the public to come and learn about these magnificent animals and how to be sensitive to them by not polluting the habitats in which we all live in. They teach us how important it is to remove life-threatening dangers to wildlife, by pitching in and cleaning up trash.
When an injured bird of prey is discovered in Florida, they ultimately come here to be cared for, and hopefully returned back to the wild. Those that have sustained permanent disabilities and cannot be returned to the wild, are kept here in this sanctuary to be cared for, and in return help teach families and children about the birds, their life cycles, and their habitats.
The birds, were very well cared for in this well maintained facility. Every day at 4pm they have a Parade of Birds, in which the raptors that were in the garden throughout the day, are, one by one, brought back to their evening quarters. When they are brought out, you can get a chance for some up close and personal glimpses of these beautiful creatures and learn about their personal unique story of how they ended up there.
