Seu Jorge and Almaz
Firestone Live
Saturday July 24th
After a long, hot Saturday (I haven't seen the forecast, but I think that long and hot is a safe prediction already), you'll need some way of cooling off on Saturday night. Why not head downtown to the Firestone to catch Brazilian actor and musician, Seu Jorge, who'll be performing with his current band, Almaz, comprising various other luminaries of the Brazilian music scene. Perhaps you saw Jorge in City of God, one of the best films of the last decade; or The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou, in which he memorably covered a load of David Bowie songs in Portuguese. This project's album, called "Seu Jorge and Almaz" comes out next week on the always-hot Stones Throw label, and is currently streaming at KCRW. The record provides loose, relaxed samba music sung largely in a language I don't speak (which makes it even sexier), plus a few covers, like Roy Ayers' funk classic 'Everybody Loves the Sunshine'. It's relaxing, it's eclectic, it's effortlessly laid-back, and I imagine that it'd be perfectly accompanied by some sort of liquor-based drink on Saturday night. Firestone will definitely be the coolest place in town.
