I am elated to finally be able to announce my participation in a truly exciting project involving the Broadway tours that come through Orlando and local visual artists.
Florida Theatrical Association, who puts on Fairwinds Broadway Across America (the tours that come through Orlando at the Bob Carr) commissioned seven local artists to reinterpret the shows in the upcoming 2010 – 11 season series.
The collection will debut October 21, 2010, 6-9pm, at the Downtown Arts District Third Thursday event. Each piece will then be displayed at the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre during the entire run of the show it represents. Finally, pieces will be auctioned off online during the week of the show and all funds raised will be distributed to local arts education programs through the Florida Theatrical Association education fund.
I was one of two curators chosen to handled the selection and management of the artists. I was in charge of finding three. I chose artists I'd worked with before, two of which had showings at TheDailyCity.com Mobile Art Show in 2010. Thomas Thorspecken created a lovely sketch based on "Young Frankenstein the Musical," which shows the gigantic set and the two main characters. Karen Russell did a large portrait of Galinda and Elpheba, the two lead characters in "Wicked." She added the most ingenious detail, I think, to her painting. Elpheba of course is green. But if you look closely, the skin tone of Galinda, has a green tint as well. Love that. And lastly, Dustin Orlando, who works with Neon Forest Art Gallery, interpreted "Rock of Ages" with a really neat 3-D wooden painting.
On the same night as the debut October 21st, be sure to stop by the moving van with the art show inside. Yup, we'll be there once again with TheDailyCity.com Mobile Art Show #16, this time featuring the artist Scarecrow.
