Rollins College’s Winter Park Institute presents actor, director and community activist Edward James Olmos in a discussion on the advantages of racial diversity in society. The talk is October 28 at 7:30 p.m. at Rollins College in the Tiedtke Concert Hall (1000 Holt Ave, Winter Park, Fla. 32789).
In his talk, titled “We’re All in the Same Gang,” Olmos will share his inspiring story of how he survived the “barrio” and succeeded on his own terms by making the right choices. The event is free and open to the public.
Olmos, a noted Mexican-American actor who starred in the television series “Battlestar Galactica” and “Miami Vice,” as well as the movies “Stand and Deliver” and “Selena,” makes time to participate in many humanitarian efforts. He is executive director of the Lives in Hazard Educational Project, a national gang prevention program funded by the U.S. Department of Justice.
In April 1999, Olmos launched a nationwide multimedia project called “Americanos: Latino Life in the United States,” a celebration of Latin culture through photography, film, music and the printed word. Co-sponsored by Time Warner Inc., and the project was designed to inspire pride and build bridges among cultures.
