The Eight Reindeer Monologues | Review

On a chilly Orlando night, I strolled into The Pointe Performing Arts Center and was taken VIP front and center where a holiday feast for the eyes delighted my senses. Final touches were being applied to a stage that looked just as festive as the play’s name, “The Eight Reindeer Monologues,” would suggest. A Christmas play celebrating cute reindeer and a jolly Santa distributing presents? Not quite.

Instead, Dasher enters the stage ranting about the other reindeers, working conditions and the job itself. Seven monologues followed portraying different sides of a controversy showcasing sex, rape, booze, and pedophilia implicating the jolly old man himself. As if that’s not enough to get you interested in seeing this very “different” depiction of the holiday spirit, there’s always the appeal of seeing a gay Cupid, a feminist Blitzen, a reformed hell raiser Comet, a “redneck” Donner and last but not least, Vixen, who is everything the name implies and is currently accusing Santa of rape. For a different but refreshing take on the holidays, go and check out this non traditional play. It’ll provide you with a humorous getaway from the gluttony, greed, family squabbles, alcoholic relatives, nasty in-laws and all the other wonderful holiday traditions in your family.
