January 21, 2011 | TheDailyCity.com Mobile Art Show is an official venue and official part of Downtown Arts District's Third Thursdays Gallery Crawl, a large monthly visual arts event that takes place in downtown Orlando. We are very grateful for City Arts Factory's continued support of our endeavors.
The idea of the show is that art and creativity should not be tied down to a location, that it can be picked up and brought anywhere. This allows for cross-pollination of artists into neighborhoods they might not normally get the chance to have their work seen in, and sometimes it means neighborhoods and areas of town void of art and creativity can, for a few hours, enjoy what other neighborhoods have on a regular basis.
What we've gotten into the habit of doing is filling a moving van with art and parking it at City Arts Factory, the "hub" of Third Thursdays in downtown Orlando, and let people walk in to view the work. We usually feature artists and work not being shown in downtown Orlando, thus complementing and not competing with existing galleries.
Last night was our most experimental Mobile Art Show ever. We ditched the moving van and used a 1996 Chevrolet Cavalier. The show was called "Mark Baratelli's CarVersations." We always hear how face time is being replaced by email, text, twitter and facebook. Well, we wanted to do something about that. For a dollar donation, you got five minutes alone in the car to talk with a local person of note, no distractions. (Yes, everyone was timed.) We provided conversation starters if needed: stuffed mascots from the Orlando Improv Festival, a local newspaper and an information packet about the current exhibit at the Orlando Museum of Art. And in case anyone needed some fresh breath, mouthwash.
Last night participants got to spend five minutes with conceptual artist Brian Feldman. Who knows who it will be the next time we do CarVersations? If you have ideas of who, and if you'd like us to bring CarVersations to your neighborhood, leave a comment.
