Satchmo at the Waldorf World Premiere

Louis Armstrong died of a heart attack on July 6, 1971 just after playing the Empire Room at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. The Riverton Playground Theatre and RedMoonJoint Entertainment companies will present the world premiere of Wall Street Journal theatre critic Terry Teachout's play about that night called "Satchmo at the Waldorf"in one of the many theatre spaces inside the Orlando Shakespeare building. With a September 15 - October 2, 2011 run, the show features local actor Dennis Neal and local director Rus Blackwell.

"Satchmo at the Waldorf is a theatrical tour de force, a play in which the same actor portrays Armstrong and Joe Glaser, the trumpeter’s controversial manager. Inspired by their actual words, the play takes a searching look at the complex relationship between the genius from New Orleans who turned jazz into a swinging art form and the hard-nosed, toughtalking ex-gangster from Chicago who made him an international icon."
