Chism is an accomplished and emerging painter and former Artist-in-Action at the A&H.  A graduate of UCF, she has exhibited her dreamlike, atmospheric paintings across Florida.  Based on landscape, the work is a formal tour-de-force, evoking new realities.
“My work is a personal search for refuge through the exploration of depth and color,” says Chism.  “Aside from color and depth, I am also interested in the viscosity of pigments. For instance, when I work with inks on raw canvas, it is a quicker painting process, but requires many layers in order to build up solid forms and color. That method shows a different emotive quality than my literally "handpainted" acrylic pieces, such as The Dead Meat of Convention. When I work with my hands (and arms) instead of brushes, it is a more spontaneous and exploratory process. I work in much thicker layers than the ink, and it allows for a breath of humanity to come into the work. This leads to more emotionally charged pieces. The process is what fuels the work as a whole.”
