Beyond the Vessel – Figures and Urns by Helaine Schneider opens January 13 and continues through March 10 at the Alice & William Jenkins Gallery at Crealdé School of Art (600 St. Andrews Blvd., Winter Park, FL 32792). Curator: Henry Sinn, Painting & Drawing Director. The public is invited to the Opening reception from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. with a gallery talk by the artist at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, January 13, 2012.
Helaine Schneider will present a solo exhibition of ceramics, figures and urns. The Orlando-based artist has an extensive background in figurative work which has become increasingly narrative in scope. Figures ranging in height from two to four feet assume poses conveying attitudes that the artist wants to explore. These pieces will be accompanied by cremation urns, which provide a vehicle for examining her feelings about loss and mortality, and the tenuous relationship between the tangible and the intangible. One of the common threads throughout this body of work is Nature.

“I have been sculpting the figure in clay for nine years. I started out focused on the figure itself, anatomy and form taking precedent over meaning; and now each piece is part of a story. I have a clear visual of how to communicate the essence and uniqueness… in a simple way.” — Helaine Schneider
