Photos: Winter Park Unveils Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

The City of Winter Park unveiled their latest green initiative as six electric car charging stations were made available to the public on Tuesday, January 10, at 11 a.m. The unveiling ceremony took place at 120 Garfield Avenue, just behind the main stage of Central Park, in downtown Winter Park.

In November 2010, the city’s Electric Utility department submitted a grant application to ChargePoint®America, a program sponsored by Coulomb Technologies to provide electric vehicle charging infrastructure to selected regions of the United States. The objective of the ChargePoint America Program is to accelerate the development and production of electric vehicles to substantially reduce petroleum consumption, reduce greenhouse gas production, and create jobs.

Since the grant application was approved in January 2011, the city’s Electric Utility department has been working with WattNext Inc., to provide power and prepare sites for the installation of the electric charging units. The city is proud to make electric car charging stations available to all residents and visitors at the following six locations:*

-        Winter Park Public Safety Facility           325 West Canton Avenue
-        North of Central Park                             120 Garfield Avenue
-        Municipal Parking Lot A                         110 North New York Avenue
-        Winter Park City Hall                             401 Park Avenue South
-        Azalea Lane Tennis Complex                 1045 Azalea Lane
-        Hannibal Square Heritage Center           642 New England Avenue

*Other electric car charging stations are located at the Best Western Mt. Vernon Inn at 110 South Orlando Avenue, and Winter Park AAA at 783 South Orlando Avenue.

The new electric car charging stations support the city’s commitment to being a Green Local Government. In 2008, the City Commission passed a resolution to “Pursue Measures to Become a Florida Green Local Government,” using criteria and standards developed by the Florida Green Building Coalition. The Green Local Government concept focuses on local government taking actions to reduce energy consumption, waste, and pollution, along with increasing recycling in our community.
