Over the last few days, you may have caught some of my reviews for things that have been playing at the Florida Film Festival. For the remainder of the event, I thought I'd do a daily "things to look out for" post. So here's today's.
Two of my favourite films are playing for the second and final times today, and they're up against each other at 9.30pm. At the Regal Winter Park Village, you could go for the Oscar-nominated Monsieur Lazhar (review), which boasts great performances from kids and adults, and offers an inspirational-teacher story that's not as corny as we've come to expect from inspirational-teacher stories. Also at 9.30, at Enzian, you can catch Kumare (review), a documentary that really won me over despite a shaky premise. It's preceded by a short film called Maurice, which I didn't mention in my initial movie review, but is French, filthy, and strictly not for children. If that doesn't tempt you, there'll be free food at Enzian from Whole Foods from 7.30pm, so what else do you jerks want?
Elsewhere, there's the narrative feature that's playing in competition The Brooklyn Brothers Beat the Best (review), at Regal WPV at 6.30. Tonight's screening will feature an appearance from writer/director/star Ryan O'Nan, and hopefully he'll bring his guitar. The film walks the line between charming and quirky, and just about gets the balance right. And to cap off a strong day of programming, I'll be going to watch the classic To Kill A Mockingbird for free in at 8pm Central Park.
Also playing today are Italian family drama The Salt of Life; Bury the Hatchet, a documentary about Native Americans in New Orleans; competition drama Magic Valley; and a couple of short films programs.
