African American Art: Harlem Renaissance, Civil Rights Era and Beyond

The Mennello Museum is one of only seven venues chosen to host “African American Art: Harlem Renaissance, Civil Rights Era and Beyond” exhibition from the Smithsonian American Art Museum. 

They will host a Black History Month Open House for the “African American Art” exhibition on Sunday, February 3, 2013. Admission to the galleries will be free and open to the public from noon-4:30 p.m. 

Additionally, during the month of February, visitors can go to the Mennello Museum website to print a free admission coupon to see the exhibition throughout the month of February (except for February 1, 9 and 10 due to special events). Each coupon can be redeemed for two free admissions to the exhibitions through February 28, 2013.


This is a rich selection of 100 paintings, sculpture, prints and photographs by 43 black artists who explored the African American experience. The exhibition opens on February 1 and continues through April 28, 2013.

“African American Art: Harlem Renaissance Civil Rights Era and Beyond” is organized by the Smithsonian American Art Museum with generous support from Alston & Bird, Amherst Holdings, LLC, Diane and Norman Bernstein Foundation, Larry Irving and Leslie Wiley, William R. Kenan, Jr. Endowment Fund, Clarence Otis and Jacqui Bradley, and PEPCO. The C.F. Foundation in Atlanta supports the museum’s traveling exhibition program, “Treasures to Go.” The exhibition in sponsored by Michael A. Mennello, The Friends of The Mennello Museum of American Art and the City of Orlando.
