February's Culture & Cocktails in Maitland to Feature Florida Native

By Ken Storey

The Art and History Museum - Maitland are known for hosting stellar must do events and February is no exception. The Culture & Cocktails for February will feature native Floridian Victor Bokas along with music by Gypsy Bluez, sponsored by Performing Arts of Maitland, and Literary Readings by Maitland Poets & Writers.

Victor Bokas is a growing name in the art world and for those of us living in Florida his works often times speak not only the broader aspects but also to us personally. "Bokas’ interest in art began at age 12 when he bought a $1 raffle ticket at an outdoor art show and won a collaborative landscape painting created by 12 artists. The following month, he started taking private painting lessons. As a native Floridian, Bokas grew up on the Gulf Coast against a backdrop of sunbathing tourists, palm trees, fish and other tropical images. Those images remain with him to this day and are frequently incorporated into his paintings. Viewers will notice homage to his Greek heritage with statues, columns, olives and vases appearing in his work, as well as Florida kitsch, tourists, beaches, flea market finds, antiques, pop culture and everyday surroundings. His images are also inspired by his passion for travel, and showcase his lush color palette and complex patterns."

Also on tap for the evening at A&H and included in the Culture & Cocktails admission fee is the opening reception, with desserts provided by Raphsodic Bakery, for the new Anna Tomczak exhibition in Gallery 4 'Anna Tomczak: Animalia from 6PM-9PM. Galleries 1-3 that are currently hosting the James Casey: Equine Sculpture exhibit will also be open for the evening.

Admission to Culture & Cocktails is free to A&H Members, and $5 for not-yet-members. The $5 includes one drink ticket.
