Orlando's Carshare: Where Its Going & What It Is

By Ken Storey

UCF has had Zipcar for some time now but the rest of Orlando still has yet to get a real carshare program.

The City of Orlando and the Florida Department of Transportation are currently developing a carshare program within the downtown region.  In new documents released by the city details of the new program give us a better understanding of what this carshare program will look like.  Designed as an option for those in the downtown region without a car (such as those who will take SunRail to work) the program will feature 6 stations throughout downtown.  Users will need to apply and be approved online before using the carshare.  A fully automated online reservation system will ensure that the cars are ready for users.  The cars will all be short term rentals meaning that they will need to be returned within 24hrs of first use.

The carshare program will be established by FDOT, overseen by City of Orlando, and managed by a third party vendor that will be selected by FDOT with City of Orlando approving.  The city will provide 12 spaces for the program.  Each of the proposed spaces is currently a non-revenue space (meaning no parking meters at it).  The cars will be available 24hrs a day, 365 days a year.  Each car will feature color-coded decal that matches a specific parking space.

FDOT will be held liable for all issues with the spaces and are required to have automobile liability insurance of at least $1million on top of a $5million general liability insurance.

Still yet to be decided is who will be the vendor for the new program and how much rental rates will cost.
