Marriage Equality Rally Coming To Lake Eola, These 2 Amazing Infographics Explain Why (& What To Expect From The SCOTUS This Week)

By Ken Storey

The U.S. Supreme Court (SCOTUS) will issue two major rulings this week in regards to human rights.  In Hollingsworth v. Perry, the Supreme Court will tackle California's Prop 8 that banned same sex marriage in that state.  The second case, Windsor v. United States, the Court will tackle  the Defense of Marriage Act.  No matter how the courts rule, which could come as early as 10a today, Florida still has a long ways to go towards marriage equality.

A Marriage Equality Rally will take place on this Thursday, June 27, 2013 at Lake Eola Park beginning at 7p.  With over 3,000 expected in attendance the rally will feature food trucks, a beer garden with full bar, speakers, and a live DJ.  The rally is put on by Come Out With Pride Orlando, The GLBT Community Center of Central Florida (The Center), the Human Rights Campaign, Equality Florida, ACLU, Watermark, and Hot Spots.

“Our community has grown impatient and it is time for the State and the Country to recognize Equal Rights for all. The ruling we are expecting could set an important precedent and send a strong signal to our State legislature that it is time to treat all citizens equally” said Mikael Audebert, Executive Director of Come Out With Pride Orlando, one of the co-organizers. “Our organization has put on the Pride Celebration for 9 years now and we have seen a major shift whereas we now welcome over 40% of allies every year at Lake Eola who come down and celebrate their pride in Equality For All. Our community at large has proven to be a fantastic ally to LGBT+ individuals and we are looking forward to demonstrating we are ONE on Thursday June 27 at Lake Eola” added Audebert.

Speakers for the rally include:

  • Joy MCC Terri Steed
  • Susanna and Scott Randolph
  • Vivian Rodriguez
  • U.S. Congressman Alan Grayson
  • Orlando Gay Chorus
  • Orlando Gay Parents Group
  • Rob Domenico
  • State Representative Linda Stewart
  • Val Demings
  • State Representative Joe Saunders
  • Nadine Smith
The event begins at 6:30p with the rally itself from 7-8:30p. Activities will continue till 10p.
