Plaza on University Across From UCF Construction Update

By Ken Storey

The Plaza on Universityacross from UCF, expects to have tenants Fall 2014. The new development will be a complex of interconnected five-story buildings surrounding a 10-level parking garage, much smaller than the ten-story ones that appeared on a site plan in 2005. 65,000 sq ft of retail will be on the first floor, facing Alafaya Trail and University Boulevard, while 500 apartments (1,300 beds) will be above.

The estimated $30-40 million project will re-energize this major intersection, providing a more urban setting.

The mixed-use project is replacing the 25 year old shopping Center, "The Plaza." It used to be a popular spot for UCF students to gather. If you're curious where the former Plaza tenants moved to, look here. The plaza was shut down despite opposition from some in the community.

American Campus, the nation's largest developer, owner and manager of student housing communities, is the developer.  They have four student housing developments in Central Florida, all near UCF. This will be their largest.

Good to see that the trees along the northwest parameter were saved.

Notice that the retail section along the western edge seems to have very large ceilings, it maybe two stories not one.
