GATORCANE! - Orlando Sentinel's Sharknado Inspired Viral Video

By Ken Storey

Just when you thought it was safe to go back outside and not get eaten in mid-air by a 'sharknado,' Orlando has its own wildlife weather incident.  The new viral campaign from Orlando Sentinel first made its presence known on August 7, 2013, in a brief write-up by writer Jon Busdeker.  The article, which debuted the poster for the 'film,' also said that it would cost less than $1million and would be produced in Florida.

The next day, the trailer for the 'film' was posted on the site and on Orlando Sentinel's Youtube channel.  The description on the Youtube channel mentioned that the 'film' was produced by Sentinel Studios.  The trailer featured a number of local landmarks, such as Cinderella's Castle, Gatorland's jaws entrance and Winter Park's Park Avenue, and even includes a cameo by Buddy Dyer.

Within 48 hours of the initial post, the fake movie had gained national news, including a mention on nationally syndicated television show RightThisMinute. Locally the show can be viewed weekdays on WRDQ TV 27 at 6:30a and 10:30p.  It was also featured on AL.com, Alabama's most-visited news website.
