Newspaper Shake Up at Orlando Sentinel and Florida Today

By Ken Storey

Brevard based paper Florida Today's editor John Kelly has been named Data and Joint Investigations Editor for the newly formed USA Today Network.  While at Florida Today, Kelly oversaw the investigative report into the space shuttle Columbia disaster in 2003.  He also is known for his weekly column covering the space industry.  That column is followed closely by many in the industry.

He will continue to live in Melbourne and will work out of Florida Today's offices in Brevard County.

In other local editor news, media industry blogger Jim Romenesko published an internal memo dated August 7, 2013 that went out to all Orlando Sentinel employees that said Orlando Sentinel Editor Mark Russell will be leaving by the end of the week to be replaced by Director of Content Avido Khahaifa.  Khahaifa will continue his current roles while adding the day-to-day management duties of the newsroom.

Publisher Howard Greenberg will now have South Florida Sun Sentinel's Editor Howard Saltz reporting directly to him instead of Khahaifa.  Previously Saltz reported to Russell.  Mark Russell has been editor since 2010 and with Orlando Sentinel since 2004.
