Celebrating its sixth year of bringing world-renowned intellectuals to Central Florida, Rollins College’s Winter Park Institute announces its 2013 fall season. This fall’s headliners include theoretical physicist Michio Kaku; peace activist Arun Gandhi; world-renowned violinist and conductor Itzhak Perlman; and former U.S. Poet Laureate Billy Collins.
“For the past six years, the Winter Park Institute has delivered to the faculty, staff and students of Rollins College and our local community exceptional leaders and experts in a variety of disciplines from politics to filmmaking,” said Gail Sinclair, executive director. “We’re proud to offer these free programs as an extension of our commitment to promote high-caliber intellectual discussion.”All events are free and open to the public, and no tickets are required. - ·Michio Kaku: “This Next 20 Years: How Science will Revolutionize Society and Our Daily Lives" Thursday, September 12, 2013 at 7:30 p.m., Alfond Sports Center at Rollins College. Most notably known for his work to complete Einstein’s unified field theory, Dr. Michio Kaku is also a futurist who examines how the latest scientific research will affect business, commerce and finance.
- Arun Gandhi: “Lessons Learned from My Grandfather: Non-Violence in a Violent World” Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2013 at 7 p.m., Knowles Memorial Chapel at Rollins College. Peace activist and proponent of non-violence Arun Gandhi carries within himself the same guiding principles as his grandfather, legendary peace-maker and spiritual leader Mahatma Gandhi.
- Itzhak Perlman: "A Conversation with Itzhak Perlman" Thursday, November 7, 2013 at 7:30 p.m., Alfond Sports Center at Rollins College. Grammy-award winning musician Itzhak Perlman is not only valued for his superior talent in classical music, but also his ability to communicate to audiences worldwide.
- Billy Collins: “Aimless Love: A Reading” Tuesday, November 12, 2013, 7 p.m., Tiedtke Concert Hall at Rollins College. Former U.S. Poet Laureate Billy Collins reads from his latest book, Aimless Love: New and Collected Poems(published in the fall 2013).
In addition, award-winning documentary filmmaker Ken Burns; former Florida governor Jeb Bush; Sharon Robinson – daughter of baseball legend Jackie Robinson; environmental advocate Laurie David and The Wall Street Journal drama critic and author Terry Teachout are slated to speak at the Winter Park Institute in spring 2014.
