New Fleet of Hydraulic Hybrid Garbage and Recycling Trucks Launched by City of Orlando

On Friday, December 20, the City of Orlando launched a new fleet of hydraulic hybrid garbage and recycling trucks to the public at Fleet and Facilities Building, 1010 South West Moreland Drive. The trucks went into service the day after Christmas which is typically the day residents have the most trash to dispose of all year long.

The new trucks will benefit both Orlando residents and the environment with features that will:
  • Reduce fuel consumption by up to 50% while collecting the same amount of residential waste and recycling as a traditional truck
  • Operate quietly throughout neighborhood streets
  • Reduce collection time, with collection efficiency improving by 5-10%
  • Reduce CO2 emissions by up to 48 tons per year, which is equivalent to planting 1,100 trees and letting them grow for 10 years
  • Pay for themselves in five years through fuel cost savings and reduce maintenance
The new garbage and recycle vehicles use the Parker RunWise® Advance Series Hybrid Drive System which is able to capture and reuse more than 70% of the energy used to stop the large work trucks and converts it into power to propel the vehicle forward. When using this stored energy, the engine runs just above idle, burning significantly less diesel.

The new trucks are part of Green Works Orlando, the City’s sustainability initiative to engage everyone who lives, works and visits Central Florida in the effort to “go green.”
