Tickets may be purchased online for $45 in advance and include one raffle ticket, non-alcoholic drinks, and light hor d'oeuvres. Additional raffle tickets and alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase at the event.
The fundraising event benefiting the International Cesarean Awareness Network (ICAN) and will call attention to Florida’s 39.1% cesarean rate as part of April’s Cesarean Awareness Month. Central Florida Mom Prom is hosted by three local chapters of ICAN; ICAN of Orlando, ICAN of East Central Florida, and ICAN of Brevard. Central Florida's three ICAN chapters hold monthly mother-to-mother support meetings several times a month. The meetings offer support to women recovering from cesareans, provide education of evidence-based birth, and advocate for informed decision making within our community.
The difference between what is outlined as evidence based maternity care practices and what routinely happens during maternity care is indicated as one reason for the high cesarean rate. “ICAN supports evidence based practice in birth including medically necessary surgical births.” said Angela Ziegler, ICAN of Orlando chapter leader, “We cannot believe as an organization, however, that all of the cesareans performed in Florida are medically necessary when that rate is nearly 40%, and much higher in some areas of the state.”
Florida has the third highest cesarean rate in the United States as 39.1% of the babies in the state are born via cesarean section. This is more than twice the percentage considered safe by the World Health Organization and exposes mothers and babies to the complications of surgical birth at an increasing rate. The Safe Motherhood Quilt, a work of art featuring handmade quilt squares honoring women who have died from pregnancy related complications, including some from cesareans, will be on display at Central Florida Mom Prom. The United States ranks 45th in the world for maternal safety, despite having the world’s highest maternity costs. The increased cesarean section rate is one factor linked to that stark statistic.
