Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and City Commissioner Patty Sheehan Launch Backyard Composting for Residents

On Feb. 26th, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and District 4 City Commissioner Patty Sheehan, along with City of Orlando Solid Waste Division staff to delivered free composters to some of the more than 2,000 residents who signed up as part of the City’s new backyard composting program.

The 80 gallon composters allow residents to turn their kitchen and yard waste into usable, nutrient rich soil. Additionally, residential composting will help divert nearly 25% of waste from local landfills and save the City $33.60 for every ton of residential waste that does not have to be dumped at the landfill.

The City’s new backyard composting program is part of Green Works Orlando, the City’s sustainability initiative to engage everyone who lives, works and visits Central Florida in the effort to “go green.”
