Ice cream flights are here! First in Orlando thanks to Kelly's Homemade Ice Cream!
So here's how this happened...
Readers use our #bringtoorlando hash tag to alert us when they find something neat in another city and want a business in Orlando to "bring to Orlando" the good idea. We blog about it in hopes a small business will read it and pick up on the idea.
One example is the cookie shot:
Entrepreneur Kristen Manieri of Orlando Date Night Blog sent us one in June: ice cream flights. We loved the concept of co-opting the idea of beer flights and wine flights for ice cream and told you about them and gave several examples. They're a way to try several flavors without committing to one giant scoop.
One rainy evening in June, we were at a food truck event talking with the owner of Kelly's Homemade Ice Cream truck and brought up the ice cream flights. She said she'd been thinking about them after seeing our post/ For 30 minutes we brainstormed together about ways to make it work inside a food truck. (It wasn't a very busy event).
Later that month, we discovered through our snooping around Orlando that Kelly's was opening a bricks and mortar location. When we called to confirm, she let us know they were going to add ice cream flights to the menu, but she didn't know how they'd be served just yet.
Today, on twitter, they tweeted a photo of.. the ice cream flight! Orlando's first!
Notice that the container for each scoop is edible. You still get the cone experience when you order the flight now. This is unlike any of the examples we shared on our original blog post.
We're very excited to try this new take on a new (to Orlando) dessert trend!
