Orlando Museum of Art Wants a New Building With Tavistock's Help

Examples of buildings featured in the Forward to 100 Report

The Orlando Museum of Art has entered into a technical and development agreement with Tavistock Development Company which will assist them with accomplishing the goals set forth in it's "Forward to 100" report. Read the report here. The report focuses on the next nine years leading up to the Orlando Museum of Art’s 100th anniversary.

The big news is that they are looking at the possibility of moving from Loch Haven Park to downtown Orlando. If, after reviewing the matter, they decide it to not be feasible, then they would most likely stay in Loch Haven Park.
More things they learned:
  1. They want a new building: "...to maximize the potential of the Orlando Museum of Art, a new container is required..." "...we believe we have a unique opportunity to make the Orlando Museum of Art a competitive destination for leisure activity, but only if it becomes an architectural icon worthy of visiting before one gives consideration to the merits of the art collection itself.
  2. They will be doing more to get into the community: "(it) is essential that we seek to become an integral part of the urban fabric that is Orlando."
  3. The new building will be an urban hub with multiple uses: "Think in terms of a museum that morphs into the public square of art and ideas and is the place where people will want to gather." "...(the museum) cannot be optimized around a single use but must be integrated into an urban space that works on multiple levels and delivers on a myriad of needs." They wish to make it into "a place that one goes to as the “place” that must be seen in the city of Orlando." "Well-attended museums are now a film center, a restaurant, a bar, a store and that is not always enough. Ultimately they are huge public spaces..."
  4. They want the youngness: The failure to expand the use of technology and social media to connect to and engage younger audiences in a shorter term than ten years from now "will work a severe hardship on our ability to compete where, as here, there is significant competition for the attention of the people."
