Bring to Orlando: the City Artist Laureate position
  1. What does one in the position do? The City Artist Laureate serves as the "cultural ambassador" for the city, participating in community events, advocating for arts education and promoting the city's creativity.
  2. Why is the position important? In an interview with Pacific Standard, Portland's first City Artist Laureate Julie Keefe said, "We need to have somebody who is honestly talking about why it’s important for our society to embrace creativity going forward."
  3. So is it just an artist pushing people to attend art shows? Keefe said in that same interview that she does not "want to talk about only non-profit causes. I want big businesses to embrace hiring creatives... I’d like them to go into corporations and start dialogue. I think it would be good for America if we had more creative people in bigger companies."
  4. How are they chosen? by the Mayor
  5. How long does the position last? two years
  6. Does it pay? The first one in Portland got a $5,000 stipend.
