The Families, Parks and Recreation Department, in collaboration with the Office of District 4 Commissioner Patty Sheehan, is installing a labyrinth at Colonialtown Square Park. Labyrinths are meandering paths that have been installed at many parks around the country, where people can engage in walking meditation as a tool for mindfulness, reflection, and environmental art.
During the process of planning the project, the Pulse tragedy occurred. To memorialize the 49 victims who perished that night, Commissioner Sheehan envisioned the placement of pavers at designated locations along the labyrinth, bearing the names of the 49 individuals, as well as an "Orlando United" heart - a symbol of the tragedy. The Colonialtown Neighborhood Association voted unanimously to support the memorial.
In alignment with City policy on Monuments & Memorials at City parks, Commissioner Sheehan submitted a Monuments & Memorials application. All approvals required under the policy have now been obtained, including approval by the Families, Parks and Recreation Board at its November 21, 2017 meeting.
Since the memorial is classified a "City-Sponsored Large Memorial" that is not in a "Cornerstone Park," the final step in the approval process is City Council consent.
