Maitland Arts Center brings 1930s spirit to Orlando Museum of Art

Maitland Art Center used to be an "artist colony for promising talent" when it was opened in 1937 as The Research Studio. The resident artists experimented with new mediums and collaborated with other artists, writers and scientists.

Today, the Maitland Art Center is a place for it's "family of artists," including faculty, staff, students and associates, to create "tradition-based art forms."

On February 5 from 6-9pm, the "family" will bring the spirit of "The Research Studio" back to the Orlando Museum of Art as a precurser to their 6-week installation in May. OMA's monthly event 1st Thursdays will play host to this family's "new, cutting-edge art works and art installations" done "in the spirit of the Research Studio."
The process of planning for this one-night event was a series of lunches where the artist would meet and talk about art. “We are serious about art, as AndrĂ© was in the past” states Kyle, co-curator for the event. “This forum has given us collective energy to pursue greater artistic opportunities as a force. “ The group will unite again for a six week exhibition opening in May at the Maitland Art Center galleries.
About 1st Thursdays: 1st Thursdays events are from 6-9pm on the first Thursday of each month at Orlando Museum of Art (OMA). They showcase a new theme with works by local artists, live music, and cash bars serving wine, beer and soft drinks, and café offerings from area restaurants. Admission is $10 and includes admission to the current OMA exhibitions.
