Back in October, visual artist Dawn Schreiner started a new project: making comic books based on people she knew, using her own beautiful visual art skillz. I was lucky enough to be selected as her very first subject.
She started the project in October, when I was in NYC auditioning for acting work. She based the story of the comic book on posts from my blog about the experience.
She wrapped up the final version in a lovely brown paper box with braided ribbon and gave it to me in December, when I returned to Orlando. She didn't tel me what was inside the box, but I knew it had to be the comic book. I was so excited about it I couldn't open it until days after she gave it to me.
So stunned. To see an artist take your words and photos and interpret them in their own unique way is cool as heck. So honored to be the first person to receive this comic book treatment! Take a look at her beautiful work and if you're lucky, she'll make one about you next. Or you can just ask her to.
The cover | The moose hat drawing is based on this photo taken in Alaska while still on tour.
The story starts with "Mark" sitting for hours at his Mobile Art Show #1. He eats a burger on an english muffin. But, "Could this be an omen of good things to come?" Yes. He realizes his wallet is gone.
Moomers is back in Orlando, senses something is wrong with Mark, and takes a nap. Mark auditions for a tour of Cabaret and finds solace in a crazy NYC passerby.
Moomers wakes up and forgets about Mark, who continues auditioning, sees a creepy "Dr Playground" van and is invited to audition for "Man in Chair."
Moomers ponders her Halloween costume options and Mark describes his "leaving the apartment" routine and thinks of creative ways to make money. He spends his spare time dissecting the lyrics to Moon River.
