Channel 9 (or 6?) Cameraman Keeps His Mic in a Safe Place

I was invited to a Press Conference (both Mayors were there thank you) for the new Nissan Leaf February 2, 2010 and this is where Channel 9 (or 6?) keeps their mics, apparently. I know nothing about TV news, so this might be industry standard.
