About:

Orlando-based photographer Barry Kirsch is kicking off his most recent photography project, Picture Peace, with a community-wide “SHOOT IN” on Friday, July 8 from 7-10 PM at Urban ReThink in Downtown Orlando. The event will introduce the community to Kirsch’s ambitious plan to leverage photography as a means to bring about world peace while also capturing free Picture Peace membership avatar photos for those wishing to join the movement.

Known best for his large-scale art noir photography series The Murder City Project, which made its international debut at the Snap! Orlando photography festival in May 2011, Kirsch has now shifted his sites from violent crime to world peace, asserting that global peace is possible by transforming every citizen on the planet into a photographer.

“It’s a simple really,” says Kirsch. “There is an unspoken code among photographers that all photographers are friends (whether your work for a rival agency or not; in the field, every photographer watches out for and readily assists any fellow photographer in need). If all photographers are friends, and friends don’t fight with friends…then a world filled with photographers would equate to a world full of people looking out for one another, thus creating an environment in which peace is transformed from possibility to reality.”

Kirsch recently launched a website, and with it, a worldwide movement, to galvanize photographers across the globe around the common mission of waging peace with their cameras. The July 8 “SHOOT IN” at Urban ReThink is designed to orient the local community to the project and to initiate members by capturing their Picture Peace avatar photos. All members of Picture Peace are required to have a black & white photo avatar depicting them with a sign that says “Picture Peace”. All member profile images will remain in black and white until world peace is achieved.

“You don’t have to be a professional photographer to join the movement,” says Kirsch. “We want everybody. Picture Peace is a community; a place for photographer friends to gather, share their photos on an equal platform (in this space: first time photo takers and camera phone junkies are on equal footing with veteran professional photographers) and engage in open-minded dialog initiated by the sharing of that work.”

Each Picture Peace member is also provided with a profile page where they can upload photos to their own gallery or group galleries; participate in forum discussions; and search for SHOOT IN and other Picture Peace events around the globe. Members are encouraged to share their images, share their photography skills, and share their lives.
