Orlando Mayor Dyer will join with preschool children, families, volunteers and "Orlando Cares" partners Early Learning Coalition and Adult Literacy League to launch the city's latest Cities of Service initiative Tuesday August 30, 2011 at 10:30am at Conway Learning Center (3636 East Michigan Street, Orlando, FL 32812). Mayor Dyer will be on hand to read “Miss Bindergarten Gets Ready for Kindergarten” by Joseph Slate to attending children.
Preschool Ambassadors is a program that will engage families in early literacy activities, increase pre-kindergarten enrollment and improve literacy instruction in pre-kindergarten centers.
Orlando Cares
On March 31, 2011, Mayor Dyer launched ORLANDO CARES, the City’s high-impact service plan made possible through a $200,000 Cities of Service Leadership Grant awarded to Orlando in June 2010, funded jointly by the Rockefeller Foundation and Bloomberg Philanthropies. Through the grant, a Mayor’s Service Advisory Council was created in the fall of 2010, made up of hundreds of key community partners and stakeholders, who designed the ORLANDO CARES programs. The advisory council will continue to be involved in the initiative, providing feedback, making recommendations and assessing progress throughout the programs.
Cities of ServiceFounded in New York City on September 10, 2009 by 17 mayors from cities around the nation, Cities of Service is a bipartisan coalition of mayors who have committed to work together to engage citizens in a multi-year effort to address pressing city needs through impact volunteerism. The coalition includes more than 100 mayors, representing more than 49 million Americans across the nation.
Cities of Service supports mayors to leverage citizen service strategies, addressing local needs and making government more effective. All Cities of Service efforts are characterized by a concept called “impact volunteering” – volunteer strategies that target community needs, use best practices, and set clear outcomes and measures to gauge progress.
