Fall Class Lineup Announced for Art and History Museums of Maitland

The Art and History Museums of Maitland (407-539-2181has announced its Fall 2012 lineup of classes for adults and children ranging from basic to advanced drawing, stained glass, jewelry-making, painting, pottery, sculpting, printmaking, creative writing, multi-media concepts and more!  Classes are instructed by professional artists and educators. 

Locations:
Studios 2, 3, 4, 6 are at Maitland Art Center, 231 W. Packwood Avenue, Maitland.  
Germaine Marvel Building is across the street from Maitland Art Center. 
The Studios at Lake Lily are at 840 Lake Lily Drive, Maitland.

This class is a basic drawing course and will teach beginners. You’ll learn how to see like an artist. Learn about left brain and right brain theory. Understand the values of line, shape, distance and angles. Learn about one point perspective as well as blind and modified contour drawing.

This class is for artists who desire to work from a live model while reviewing, or learning, the anatomical landmarks of the figure. You will work from a Live Model in each class. A life-sized skeleton, and anatomical models and illustrations will aid in your learning. Reproductions of figurative work from the “Old Masters” as well as Modern and Contemporary Artists will inspire you!

DRAWING: SCRATCHBOARD ILLUSTRATION

Scratchboard is a piece of cardboard similar to poster board that has been coated on one side with a layer of hard white chalk. The artist paints, rolls, or sprays black ink onto the surface. After the ink dries, the artist scratches through the ink with a sharp stylus or knife, creating white marks or lines by exposing the chalk underneath. Scratchboard paper that has been pre-inked is also available. Some areas of drawing will also be covered. This class is for anyone looking to try something unique and beautiful. Materials list will be provided.

Create velvety colors and textures unlike those of paint when you choose to use soft, hard or oil pastels (stick or pencil). Discover your own style by experimenting freely a variety of techniques: scumbling, hatching, drawing and pointillism. Obtain effects similar to most types of oil paintings using oil pastel on canvas or gessoed hardboard. Students will learn to produce smooth gradients or hyper-realism. Sketchbooks are encouraged.

You will learn how to design, carve, model, build up and manipulate hard and soft sheet, block, and wire waxes into virtual jewelry using different approaches and techniques to create your own pendants, earrings, pins, or rings which are then cast in sterling silver.

MODELING: HOW TO BECOME AN ARTISTS MODEL

One Day Workshop, September 18, 12:00 p.m.–5:00p.m.; Germaine Marvel Building

Skill Level: Beginning, Participants must be 18 or older.
This one day workshop includes a classroom portion and a practical portion. The classroom portion will cover the history of art modeling, the mechanics, mental aspects, and business issues. The practical portion of the workshop includes a Studio session during which artists will draw student models. Students may wear briefs or bikini for the practical session should they not yet be completely comfortable modeling nude. Students should bring a robe.

Treat yourself to an enriching experience by working with clay. You will learn how to create many items that will amaze yourself and others. You will be taught the basics of clay that will enable you to construct the items you wish to make. Techniques in hand building, wheel throwing, altering shapes, decorating, glazing, and firing will be covered in this class. You can decide on the projects that you want to make, or you can follow the scheduled project for that lesson. Personal instruction is provided to everyone in addition to group instruction. Items are fired quickly and glazed items are usually ready to take home the following week.

Skill Level: Pottery is a Prerequisite for this class. Students will learn to center the clay and pull the walls and shape pots as they desire. Students will learn how to apply stoneware glazes and raku glaze. A raku firing will take place during the last day of class. Fee includes firing costs.
