The TRUE HEART MASQUERADE GALA (October 29, 2011) benefits the American Cancer Society and tomorrow’s leaders and physicians. TRUE ALUM, LLC partnered with the Institute of African American Health, Inc. and developed the TRUE HEART MASQUERADE GALA and expanded Project H.E.A.L.T.H (Health Education and Life Transforming Habits) for the purposes of decreasing disease, encouraging the prevention and early detection of cancer-related health problems, as well as promoting healthy living through proper diet and exercise.
Additionally, TRUE ALUM has taken a novel approach in addressing the healthcare gap through social media. A major barrier of effective community mobilization is the need for collaboration between existing organizations. Although we love collaboration, social media and “peer packaged” health information dissemination eliminate the need for organizations to “agree to work together” in order to be effective. Likewise, the obvious barriers of socioeconomic, education, employment, etc. are “mitigated” to some extent by social media because of its almost universal access. All of these factors make ‘social media’ and the “peer packaged” health information dissemination a novel approach to elimination of health disparities.
The TRUEHEART SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a graduating student that has been accepted in to medical school. This scholarship honors students that not only exemplify extraordinary commitment to healthcare, but are also viewed as leaders in school, their discipline, and in their community. The TRUEHEART scholars are important to us because these students have learned how to balance community service and the demands of their education. These students are our future.
