Orlando conceptual artist Doug Rhodehamel has made one thing clear throughout his 51-show career: Common materials can be transformed into immersive, multi-sensory experiences. Art audiences have responded by embracing Rhodehamel, whose pieces turn up in thousands of homes and have appeared on literally all seven continents of the world.

His latest endeavor will deviate from his traditional theme, as he will turn a most un-common material — bacon— into a smokey-flavored wonderland. Referring to what he deems “the Miracle of Bacon,” Rhodehamel contends that the “most magical food in the world” has an ingrained, nostalgic appeal. “When people hear ‘bacon,’ they perk up,” he says, “because it’s one of those foods that hearkens back to childhood, to being woken up by the smell of bacon.”

The show is evolving rapidly and guests will partake of the smells, textures and tastes of bacon, while pan-frying in the glow of bacon-themed works of art.

From the brain of Doug Rhodehamel -

For the past couple years I began to observe the reaction of people whenever I mentioned the word "bacon". It was a very instinctive, primal and happy reaction. I began experimenting with this a bit, cooking up some bacon and offering it to friends or bringing to work and parties. Most everyone reacted to this as if I was handing out cash.

After a bit more experiments and a bit of research I have determined that A: bacon tastes good.... and B: The smell and taste of bacon has that incredible ability to transport you instantly to childhood when the smell of bacon in the morning woke you up and alerted you to the fact that it was the weekend and a morning of breakfast and cartoons awaited you! It's like smelling a box of crayons, take a whiff and just TRY to block out any grade school memories.

For my exhibit, I have concentrated my efforts more on the experience of bacon rather than the actual food itself. I have created my version of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate factory, but with bacon. Oh... and I'm talking about the old school Willy Wonka, not that sorry piece of crap that came out a few years ago. I hope this interpretation will also take you back to those delightful, childhood memories.

Kevin Bacon has been invited, no response from him just yet, but who knows... he might show up... such is the power of bacon.
