Registration Open for Winter Art Classes at Maitland Art + History Museums

Registration is open for the 2012 winter session of classes for adults and children at The Art & History Museums in Maitland (231 W. Packwood Avenue, Maitland). You can register onlineby phone (407-539-2181 x 265) or in person at the museum campus in Maitland between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM Tuesday – Friday, and between 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM on Saturday. Sign up for classes by January 13 and receive 10% OFF all class and workshop registrations.  If registering online before January 13, use web registration code: EARLY1. 


Studios 2, 3, 4, and 6 are located on the main campus of the Maitland Art Center, 231 W. Packwood Avenue, Maitland, FL 32751.  The Germaine Marvel Building is located at 210 W. Packwood Avenue, Maitland (across the street from the Center).  The Studios at Lake Lily are located at 840 Lake Lily Drive, Maitland, on beautiful Lake Lily.

This class will teach beginners the basics of drawing.  You’ll learn how to see like an artist.  Learn about left brain and right brain theory. Understand the values of line, shape, distance and angles.   Learn about one point perspective as well as blind and modified contour drawing.

This class is for artists who wish to work from a live model with an emphasis on learning the skeletal and muscular landmarks of the head, neck and face.  Learning to see these anatomical landmarks in each individual model will improve your ability to achieve a likeness! Draw from a live model in each class as well as a life-sized skull/skeleton. Anatomical illustrations and reproductions of work from the “Old Masters” as well as other figurative artists will aid us in our learning.

Create velvety colors and textures unlike those of paint when you choose to use soft, hard or oil pastels (stick or pencil). Discover your own style by experimenting freely a variety of techniques: scumbling, hatching, drawing and pointillism. Obtain effects similar to most types of oil paintings using oil pastel on canvas or gessoed hardboard. Students will learn to produce smooth gradients or hyper-realism. Sketchbooks are encouraged.

Treat yourself to an enriching experience by working with clay. You will learn how to create many items that will amaze yourself and others. You will be taught the basics of clay that will enable you to construct the items you wish to make. Techniques in hand building, wheel throwing, altering shapes, decorating, glazing, and firing will be covered in this class. You can decide on the projects that you want to make, or you can follow the scheduled project for that lesson. Personal instruction is provided to everyone in addition to group instruction. Items are fired quickly and glazed items are usually ready to take home the following week.

This unique two day workshop is designed for beginners to professionals.  The workshop will include an introduction in the use and manipulation of Japanese Masa paper to create textural areas from which a painting can be developed.  Both eastern and western materials are used in innovative ways to create more exciting and expressive paintings.  You’ll get to try your hand at sumi-e brushwork, create your own origami journal, crinkle and stain paintings on sheets of Masa paper, pour color for dazzling effects, and design intriguing abstract note cards.

You’ll print your fish on fabric or rice paper during this one day workshop.
