Yield $164 For Not Yielding to Pedestrians

Last week, Orlando Police Department and the Orange County Sheriff’s Office launched the citation phase of Operation Best Foot Forward, ticketing drivers $164 for failing to yield to pedestrians at crosswalks as Florida law requires.

$164.

Sweet Jesus.

On Tuesday, August 14 and Wednesday, August 15, 2012, for  one hour each day, the OPD and OCSO issued 172 tickets for pedestrian violations. Over the summer, the OPD and OCSO issued 1,616 warnings to drivers for failing to yield – slowing or stopping if necessary – to pedestrians at marked crosswalks.

Resuming on Tuesday, August 21 ticketing will ramp back up at targeted locations. Excluding Conway Road and Hargill Drive, these locations were chosen due to Crossing Guard complaints of vehicles not yielding to pedestrians – children and parents crossing the street at crosswalks.
