Back in August here on TheDailyCity we reported on the new high resolution digital billboard that is going in downtown. The screen is on the southern tower of what is now Chase Plaza. Initially the Historic Preservation Board recommended a denial based on the clause in the downtown Special Signage District that states "Digital screens must be flush with the building façade, architecturally integrated into the building onto which it is affixed, and oriented towards the pedestrian and not passing motorists."
In January the Historic Preservation Board actually approved the zoning request for not one but two new signs though the board had initially called for neither to be approved though the board did approve them with little actual conversation on the conflict with current rules.
The sign was approved and the end of last week it was finally installed on the tower. A testing pattern was seen late last week but over the weekend the screen sat in the dark. It should go live sometime in the next week.

Special thanks to reader Zac Alfson for sending in this picture of the new screen. |
