Nick Cave Soundsuit 2011 Acquired by Orlando Museum of Art

The Orlando Museum of Art announced the addition of Soundsuit, 2011, by American artist Nick Cave, to its permanent collection, purchased with funds provided by the Acquisition Trust. Nick Cave, recently featured in Harper's Baazar, spoke at the museum in a provate event on October 17, 2012.

About Soundsuit, 2011: Soundsuit, 2011, which will be on view at the OMA beginning October 18, was designed and fabricated to be a functional costume that could be worn by a performer or displayed as a freestanding sculpture. The lower half of the piece consists of crocheted panels that form a body stocking covering the figure's torso, legs and feet. The upper half of the piece is a complex metal armature upon which are mounted dozens of found objects such as ceramic sculptures of birds and figurines, metal fruits, flowers and leaves, strings of beads, a pink wig and an antique gramophone.

About the artist: Nick Cave is an American fabric sculptor, dancer and performance artist. He is best known for his Soundsuits: wearable fabric sculptures that are bright, whimsical, and other-worldly. He resides in Chicago and is director of the graduate fashion program at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. With the help of several assistants he has made suits out of everything from sisal to hundreds of plastic buttons topped by an abacus, one of many flea-market discoveries. Beads, sequins and feathers -- always sewn, never glued -- are also favorite materials.
