December 14th, 2012, Ron Verbal of the Orlando Fire Department successfully maneuvered a $250,000 robot through an obstacle course in order to diffuse a dummy-granade in 31 minutes to win the 3rd annual Robot Rodeo.
Verbal (along with partner Trenton Campbell) lead the robot through a darkened building, over a curb, up a flight of make-shift stairs, and finally through a stream of water before getting to the grenade, which was hanging 7 feet off the ground. When getting to the target, the robot was able to grab the grenade, and place it into a containment barrel.
With a win at the 'Robot Rodeo', the Orlando Fire Department will have bragging rights over the bomb squads from the Brevard, Lake, Manatee, Orange, Seminole, St. Lucie and Volusia sheriffs' offices, as well as the U.S. Air Force bomb squad. The Orlando Fire Department will also choose the location of the next event, which will be held sometime next year.
