Springfield Coming To Universal Studios Orlando

By Ken Storey

After months of completely obvious construction Universal Studios has finally announced the Springfield is coming. The new Simpsons themed area will take over the former International Film & Food Festival Restaurant along with the lakeshore area in front of the restaurant and current Simpson ride.

“This will be a must-see experience for Simpsons fans all over the world,” said Mark Woodbury, President of Universal Creative. “For the first time ever, they’re going to be able to enter a world that they’ve only seen on television – and we’re really excited to bring that world to life.”

The new area is the first fictional setting visible from the central lake at Universal Studios and is also the first fictional setting to involve multiple attractions for the park. The Simpsons ride has already proven to be popular with guests at the park, often times reporting some of the longest waits of any family attraction within Universal Studios.

“This new expansion will broaden and deepen the already incredible experience at Universal, by bringing to life the iconic landmarks of Springfield that fans have grown to love,” said Jeffrey Godsick, President, Fox Consumer Products. “Fans will literally be able to live and breathe Springfield as they visit the statue of Jebediah, enjoy a Krusty Burger, and have a seat at Moe’s Tavern, which are just a few of the great experiences awaiting at Universal.”

The current attraction will remain the central focus on the new land but will be joined by a number of new additions. Springfield icons such as the central park statue seen in the show will be featured throughout the new land.  New Simpsons characters, Krusty the Clown and Sideshow Bob, will be featured in the new land.

Springfield will be broken into two sub-lands:

Krustyland- The area in front of the current Simpsons ride will keep its Krustyland theme and the carnival games found there. A new ride Kang & Kudo’s Twirl ‘n’ Hurl will be added to the land.  This carnival style spinner is similar to Dumbo but here “foolish humans” will fly UFOs instead
.
Fast Food Boulevard- the pathway in front of the former International Film & Food Festival Restaurant.  Some of the restaurants and stores featured along Fast Food Boulevard include:

  • Krusty Burger- Serving authentic ‘Krusty-certified meat’ sandwiches
  • Luigi’s Pizza
  • Frying Dutchman
  • Cletus’ Chicken Shack- A new take on Kentucky Fried Panda that uses Simpson’s redneck character Cletus as the central character.
  • Moe’s Tavern- Serving ‘Duff Beer’ -an original brew created just for Universal Studios.
  • Duff Gardens- an outdoor patio area with lakeside seating that is modeled after the Duff Brewery.
  • Lard Lad- A stand alone doughnut shop with the large Lard Lad statue out front. This along with Duff Gardens are the only two buildings on the lake side of Fast Food Boulvard
  • Android’s Dungeon & Baseball Card Shop- A new gift shop.
While an official opening date has yet to be set the first phase should open within the next few months.
