Depressed: The Cake Shop

By Ken Storey

Bring to Orlando:

One in four people suffers from mental illness at some point in their life. A new pop-up bakery is here to help bring awareness and to fund-raise for mental health organizations.  The Depressed Cake Shop will take the typically colorful world of a bakery and turn it on its head.

At this shop all the baked goods will be grey, uninspiring pieces of baked bliss.  Once the cupcakes are bitten into they revel a bright colorful inside.

The baking process itself is also a part of the awareness campaign.  Many of the cakes at the pop-up bakery will be made by those with personal experiences with depression.  The baking will be an outlet for them to express the struggle that they go through while also providing an outlet for them to relieve some of their daily stresses.  The bakery is currently seeking sponsorship to hold a series of baking therapy sessions around the UK that will eventually become a support network of those who use baking as a tool to help combat their depression.

The Depressed Cake Shop plans to open on August 2nd, 2013 in London (47 Brick Lane, London E1 6PU).  There will also be pop-up events through the UK with specific spots already announced including; Derby (Aug 4 at the Summer Food and Craft Festival), Glasgow, Cardiff, Liverpool, Birmingham, Southend/Essex, Berkshire, and Leeds.  It is also planning a special appearances in Sydney, Australia though no details of this location have yet to be announced.

Miss Cakehead, the brains behind the cake shop, is currently seeking interested bakeries or non-profits in hosting a pop-up shop in cities around the world.  Wouldn't Orlando be a great place for one of these to 'pop-up?'
