[VIDEO] International Drive Makeover: Bus Lane, Bike Lane, Sidewalks

By Ken Storey

On July 9, 2013 Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer officially broke ground on the North International Drive Improvement Project, stretching from Universal Blvd to Oak Ridge Road.  The ground break was held in the median of I-Drive.  Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and District 6 City Commissioner Samuel B. Ings both spoke at the groundbreaking.

The 1.5 mile long, $9.2 million project will add:

  • dedicated lane for buses and right turns
  • bicycle lanes
  • steel mast arm traffic signals
  • 10-foot wide sidewalks along the majority of the road
  • modified un-signalized median openings
  • all new landscaping

$5.17 million in Federal Surface Transportation Funds are being used to help pay for the project, with Transportation Impact Fees from the southwest part of City of Orlando assisting in the remainder.  The current finish date is 4th Quarter of 2014 with a mostly daytime construction timeline.

The redone section will include a bus and right turn only lane, a bike lane, and landscaped buffer between the sidewalk and road.
