Best Picture Oscar Buzz Movies Now Playing in Orlando

Orlando Lens
By Nicholas Ware
Tis the season for "prestige" films. This film category is those big-budget, non-teen-targeted films the studios releases towards then end of the year to capitalize on awards season buzz, particularly that little golden dude, Oscar. For those who want to get a head start on award season viewing, The Daily City provides for you a short guide to the films currently showing that are expected to compete for Best Picture this year. Be warned: except where noted, I cannot vouch for these films' quality, only the likelihood of their nomination.

12 Years A Slave
What Is It: A black free man in the north, Solomon Northrup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), is kidnapped and sent to the South to live as a slave. Based on a true story.
What Else Might It Win: Best Director, Best Actor, Best Costumes, Best Art Design, Best White Guilt (with good reason)
Where Is It Playing: Enzian, at least for this week and next week, possibly more. Also, a large number of first-run multiplexes, but go see it at Enzian if you can.

Gravity
What Is It: An astronaut (Sandra Bullock) is stranded in space when an accident occurs. I've seen this. It is excellent and super intense and looks incredible. It's also been a big hit, so you might have seen it too.
What Might It Win: Best Director, Best Actress, every single technical award, not Best Score (there's not much music)
Where Is It Playing: Nearly every large first-run multiplex.

Captain Phillips
What Is It: A freighter captain (Tom Hanks) is held hostage by Somali pirates. Based on a true story.
What Might It Win: Best Director, Best Actor, Best Job At Making A Real Guy Who Was Massively Disliked By His Crew Into A Hero
Where Is It Playing: Nearly every large first-run multiplex.

All Is Lost
What Is It: A solo sailor (Robert Redford) has a Gravity-like experience, but at sea. There's no pirates, but we do sense a theme among these last three, don't we?
What Might It Win: Best Actor, Wettest Picture (beating out Captain Phillips).
Where Is It Playing: Regal Winter Park.
