Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer Joins Orlando Tech Association to Teach After-School All-Star Middle School Students Computer Coding
Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer will join members of the City’s new digital main street, the Orlando Tech Association, on Thursday, December 11 at 4:15pm to teach computer coding to at-risk middle school students in the City of Orlando’s After-School All-Stars program at Memorial Middle School, Media Center Computer Lab, 2220 29th Street.
The students will learn basics of computer coding by participating in a one-hour tutorial based on the popular children’s movie Frozen or the Angry Birds game.
This tutorial is being hosted during Computer Science Education Week and is part of Hour of Code, a global movement to introduce students to programming at an early age.
In Orlando, more than 40 volunteers from the Orlando Tech Association will lead Hour of Code tutorials at four City middle schools: Howard Middle School, Jackson Middle School, Memorial Middle School and Odyssey Middle School.
Hour of Code will expose some of the City’s most at-risk students to the basics of computer science which helps nurture creativity, logic and problem-solving skills. By learning early, students will have a foundation for success in any 21st-century career path. The tutorial will also introduce students to leaders from Orlando’s technology industry which is now the second largest in Orlando.
