$164 Fine for Drivers Who Don't Yield to Pedestrians on February 10th

Pedestrians in the street during The Daily City's Mobile Art Show

In 2009, Metro Orlando had the most dangerous streets for pedestrians among areas of at least a million residents. Read about it here.

In 2011, Orlando won the same notoriety. Read about it here.

In fact, Orlando was named the “Most Dangerous” pedestrian city of the past decade according to Smart Growth America’s Dangerous by Design Report ranking.

Sad Facts:
  1. In Orange County, two pedestrians are injured every day and one is killed each week according to MetroPlan Orlando.
  2. In Orange County, 586 pedestrians were injured or killed in in 2015 according to MetroPlan Orlando.
Best Foot Forward l (Website) launched May 30, 2012 to help combat this problem. Read about the launch here.

Best Foot Forward has 3 methods to increase driver yield rates:
  1. Education in areas with a high rate of pedestrian injuries and fatalities
  2. Engineering improvements like street lighting, pavement markings and signals
  3. Enforcement
The third method is being put into action February 10th when Best Food Forward executes a "crosswalk crackdown." OPD and OCSO law enforcement go undercover to see if drivers stop at designated crosswalks near schools. Drivers who fail to yield will be speeding toward a $164 ticket and three points on their license.

This is the first of three high-visibility enforcement details in 2016. Motorists should be on the lookout for OPD and OCSO aggressively enforcing 11 marked crosswalks throughout Orange County.

Undercover officers dressed in plain clothing will cross the street, giving motorists enough time to yield. Those who fail to yield will receive a verbal warning or, in some cases, a $164 ticket and three (3) points on their license.

To date, 12 high visibility enforcement details have taken place and 2,187 citations have been issued to motorists as part of Operation Best Foot Forward.
