Sign on Bumby Built in 1961 to be Saved

The building on the property at 530-538 N. Bumby Ave (MAP) will become a furniture store with future uses including office or retail.

The property consists of a vacant 1 & 2 story, 8,096 sq. ft. mixed use building and associated surface parking at the northwest corner of N. Bumby Ave. and Mt. Vernon St. in the Colonialtown South neighborhood.

The building was built in 1961. In 2008 the current owner purchased the property. The building's been vacant since 2014.

The owner is renovating the building and property, with said renovations constituting a substantial improvement and requiring that the site be brought up to Code to the maximum extent possible.

The owner is requesting seven variances to bring the nonconforming site up to Code. One of those variances was to allow retention of an existing pole sign in the Traditional City Overlay. The existing decorative pole/pylon sign is at the northeast corner of the property. There's a smaller pole sign at the southeast corner of the property off Mt. Vernon St.

The Board of Zoning Adjustment supported saving the “historically significant” pole/pylon sign on the north side of the property. The applicant will remove the smaller pole sign.
